Some 900 million people travel on holiday each year. Global tourism results in the emission of huge quantities of CO2 gas, which is bad for the climate. In Thailand, a pilot project is proving that sustainable, climate-friendly tourism is possible.
A pilot project for sustainable tourism is underway on the island of Kho Khao. The international climate protection initiative is supporting this plan to improve the energy efficiency of local hotels. The measures include insulating the buildings, carrying out heat recovery, installing more efficient pool pumps and air conditioning, and providing training to the hotel management. It is hoped Kho Khao will serve as a model for Thailand's tourism industry.
